Louis was born in Middleton, Derbyshire, on the 11th December 1895. He enlisted in Brandon, Manitoba, 18th November 1916, stating his occupation as a farmer, and his next of kin as his father, Edward Spencer, of Gilbert Plains, Manitoba.
He was five feet seven and a half inches in height, weighed 165 pounds, had a fair complexion, blue eyes and light brown hair, and belonged to the Church of England. He had five vaccination marks on his left arm and a varicocele.
